School Life at Lacombe Christian School

LCS recognizes that each student has a different learning style and learns in a different way and to a different degree. We believe that provisions must be made for the education of exceptional students to encourage and ensure growth.  The Curriculum at LCS adheres to the requirements set out by Alberta Education.  It also includes curriculum developed by Christian Schools International.

E.C.S.:

E.C.S. in a Christian environment is a very important and necessary step in the life of every child. It is designed to prepare children to begin academic learning in the light of God's Word and to help children adapt to the school routine in a Christian atmosphere. We desire it to be a happy experience, as we believe children do better in school if they begin with an enthusiasm for learning and a desire to act as a child of God.

Kindergarten students attend school full days on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday combinations. The ECS program strives to achieve a balance between the informal nurturing of the home and the more formalized teaching of the school.

Elementary:

Elementary classes (grades 1 to 6) include Bible, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, Art, French and Music.

Junior High:

Junior High classes (grades 7 to 9) include Bible, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, Art, French and Information Processing.  Junior High complementary classes include: Drama, Student Leadership & Personal Fitness, Digital Photography, Art, Foods, Music Appreciation, Drafting and Scale Modelling.

Intramural sports:

Programs run throughout the year for grades four through nine. This is a voluntary program, highlighting a different sport each month. A variety of inter-school sports are also offered to the students. These include volleyball, basketball, track and field, cross-country and badminton.

Extra Curricular:

At LCS, there is an awareness that significant education happens beyond the classroom, that children and young people need a comprehensive life experience.  Therefore, the extra-curricular program is seen as a vital extension of the curriculum.  Currently, our extra-curricular events include:  ski nights at Canyon Ski Hill, Elementary and Junior High hockey program, drop-in badminton, swimming, after school violin program.

Here is an overview of the events that take place at LCS:

Dedication Church Service:  Usually the last Sunday in August where the Central Alberta Area Christian Schools organize an evening church service to dedicate the new school year.

Buddy Groups:  Devotional Assembly time.  Each class is paired up with another class to spend time together one period on a Wednesday afternoon each month.  The theme for the school year is what the devotionals are focused on.  Additionally on Hot Lunch days, the buddy classes will eat lunch together to further connect spiritually.

Hot Lunches:  Parent Volunteers organize a monthly Hot Lunch for the students.  Order Forms are sent home twice per year to order and pre-pay for the lunch, if you choose to participate.

Christmas Concert:  usually held the second last week before school holidays, the grades K-6 music students and our Junior High Music Appreciation students participate.

Christmas Rotary Choral Festival:  This is held the first week of December at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.  The grades involved vary from year to year.  During this evening sponsored by the local Rotary, our students sing a few Christmas songs as part of a larger program.

Easter Program:  Prepared for the Easter Season, our elementary students sing and our Junior High student contribute.

Grandparents’ & Seniors’ Day:  During the month of April, LCS hosts our annual Grandparents’ & Seniors’ Appreciation Day.  This is a special day where the students may invite their grandparents or a ‘special’ senior to lunch and a short program.  Following is an opportunity for classroom visits and fellowship.  If your child(ren) does not have and grandparents that are able to attend, we encourage you to contact the office and we’ll make arrangements with grandparents or seniors in our area who would be thrilled to “adopt” a grandchild for the day.

Ski Night at Canyon Ski Hill in Red Deer:  Usually held on four different Fridays throughout the winter months from 5:00 to 9:00, this proves to be a fun-filled evening for the entire family.  Registration takes place at the school office on Tuesdays , a week prior to each ski night.

Annual Spring Drive:  Held mid-February to the end of March, this drive is organized by the Development Committee to help pay for capital debt.

Mini Mall:  This is a school-wide event held in the West Campus, with each grade setting up a booth such as: ice cream sales, face painting, etc.  On that day, students are to bring money to purchase tickets to pay for the variety of activities in the afternoon.  Parents are more than welcome to join us.  Funds raised help pay for the development of Christian Textbooks and units, and we usually donate a portion to a charity of our choosing.  This event usually takes place in January.

School Auction:  This fun evening is put on by the Auction Committee and our Booster Club.  On this evening in April, supper is served in the gym and an auction follows at about 6:30pm.  The proceeds from this evening are used by the Board for different projects or needs the school may have.

Building Blocks Thrift Store:  The Thrift Store is located on 5111-50th Ave (Main Street) Lacombe.  It is volunteer-led and all proceeds from the store support LCS and Central Alberta Christian High School.  Volunteers are always needed, as well as donations of in-good-repair items of clothing or household goods.  For more information please call 403-782-9511.

Student Union Ticket Paks:  Junior High sells these popular coupon books, full of valuable coupons from Co-op, Sobeys, and many more.  The funds from the sales of these books help all the students from K-9 with sports, special events, and guests to the school.
